Social Media Are You There Yet!

The whole world seems to have gone in to social media overload. From communicating with friends to business marketing, social media has become a part of our everyday lives. I have been talking to dealers all over the country that are trying to figure out what it means to be involved in social spaces such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and the several hundred more sites available today. The second question I get is how to manage all of these sites and how to make it a profitable part of their business.

Think of social media as an electronic word of mouth that can instantly spreads from one customer to another or more likely a potential customer. The difference here is that that same comment from one person no longer spreads to one individual but to several hundred maybe even thousands in a matter of seconds.

Social media is just that “Media”. You wouldn’t buy radio time without planning out your message or figuring out the best time slots for your message to be aired. This approach would most likely not get you the results you are looking for and your message would not be consistent or relevant.

Social media outlets paired with engaging content and a unique message equals customer interaction and retention. The goal for your social media campaign should be to create a message that invites conversation and participation from your audience. The more your customers becomes “Emotional Involved” with you, your teams and your message the better chance you have of creating an active and positive dialog with them.

The next couple of weeks we will be discussing more about Social Media campaigns and really focusing on the “How To” part of building this department within your store. I invite you to leave questions, feedback or stories about your social media adventures.

Happy Socializing,

Colter Lillich

New ways of thinking about marketing - by Pete Cashmore

The Web Economy = Trust + Attention

The problem: people assume that money is the web’s primary currency. But the web trades in other currencies: trust and attention.
Trust is the confidence we place in individuals and brands. I’d suggest it’s the highest form of currency in human societies: extremely hard to build and remarkably easy to lose (see Chris Brogan’s Trust Agents).
Attention, meanwhile, is the currency of abundance. In a post-scarcity world where billions of web pages cry out for my attention every second of the day, paying attention to you is a gesture that says “you matter to me” (see Jeff Jarvis’ What Would Google Do, among others).
Twitter ads steal attention and destroy trust. That’s the exact opposite of what we need.

Advertisers: Add Value, Don’t Interrupt!

DellOutlet ImageHow do brands get their messages across if not by interrupting us? They need to become agents of trust, too.
Dell is making millions by posting special offers to its Twitter followers. Blendtec increased blender sales 5x by turning its ads into entertainment. Comcast joins the conversation simply by asking “how can I help?”. Those are just three examples from the hundreds we’ve posted in recent years.
Brands need to befriend us, build relationships, and offer so much value that we broadcast our positive experiences out to our own networks of trust. They might entertain us. They might help us. They might become enablers of our own personal goals. And when they do, we’ll return the favor. “Spend your attention on this”, we’ll say, “it’s important!”
